The Hyundai Kona has only been around for a few years. However, it has quickly become popular among customers and critics for its numerous attributes, including fun and easy-to-drive subcompact cars. The Kona is split into five trims to cover virtually all types of driver tastes and needs: from the budget-friendly to the sporty and luxurious.

The SE is the base trim level of the Hyundai Kona. Powering is a 2.0-Liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque as enough output for driving. Hitched to this engine is a 6-speed automatic transmission, which has a manual shift mode for more control over gear shifting. With standard front-wheel drive, the car produces 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is above average for the subcompact car class. Plymouth, MA drivers can upgrade to all-wheel drive for better traction on slippery surfaces.

The Kona is designed as an SUV, with two cloth-trimmed rows. So, even as a small car, it provides enough room for up to five adult passengers. Entertainment is provided by the combination of six speakers, AM/FM radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, Bluetooth wireless technology, two USB ports for hooking up mobile devices, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Remote keyless entry enables Cranston drivers to access the Kona by pressing the key fob.

The Kona SE’s numerous safety features include a trio of driver-assistance technologies. Forward collision warning helps prevent the occurrence of a front-end collision. Lane keep-assist applies to steer to get you back to your lane of travel if you leave it without signaling. A driver-attention monitor suggests you take a break from the road if it detects drowsiness.

The SEL trim level spruces up the Kona from its base-level SE model. The front seats are heated, and leather replaces the urethane on the steering wheel and shift knob. Remote keyless entry is upgraded to proximity keyless entry to allow access with just the key fob in your possession. A push-button engine start next to the steering wheel eliminates an ignition key to get Taunton drivers started. Entertainment gets a boost with HD Radio technology and a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and lane change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are added to the Kona’s list of driver-assistance technologies.

SEL Plus

The SEL Plus trim has all the SEL’s features, plus more. Introduced at this level is Hyundai’s Blue Link telematics system, which consists of two three-year subscriptions. Blue Link Connected Care includes functions such as monthly vehicle health reporting and enhanced roadside assistance, and Remote Package includes functions such as remote start and remote door lock/unlock.

The addition of Blue Link is microcosmic of the Kona’s comfort and convenience enhancements at the SEL Plus level. Eight-way power is added on the driver’s seat, entertainment is boosted with an eight-speaker Infinity premium stereo system, a center console pad is added for wireless device charging, and a 4.2-inch color screen replaces the smaller, 3.5-inch monochromatic one for displaying driver information.

Most drivers looking for significantly more from their Kona vehicles might be best suited with the Limited model. Chief among its improvements is the turbocharged 1.6-Liter I4 with 175 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, as well as a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission for a smoother driving feel. Other enhancements include automatic climate control and leather seat trim.

As the top-level trim, the Kona Ultimate—which, although sharing the same powertrain configuration as the Limited—has unique features such as the following:

  • Head-up display
  • 8-inch touchscreen navigation
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Smart cruise control

Ultimately, the new Hyundai Kona is virtually unmatched as a subcompact ride. If you are in the New Bedford area, test-drive one at Hyundai of Plymouth near Quincy and meet with one of our Hyundai experts today.
